A trip into town

Helen and myself took a trip into Sydney where she works. Her firm had a number of computers that they were getting rid of. Well ow't fer now't ere couldn't refuse the offer could he. So we ended up with a couple of HP Compaq Pentium 4's.

Helen drove in and I decided to take the camera along to show you some pics of Sydney Town. I made the pics 640x480 pixels so i'm not sure how they will appear.

This is a shot of the clock towers and onion domes on what was Grace Bros Department Store and date back to the early 1900's. The building is now a shopping centre, the facade being heritage protected. The domes were a bit of a novelty as were lit up at night by that new fangled electric stuff. Grace Bros was famous for their extensive window displays. Hence the Oz expression that a person has got more front than Grace Bros.

A typical Oz pub the Abercrombie Hotel on Broadway just before the CBD. These pubs are fully tiled inside and out, the cleaners job was easy, just hose the joint out. We have just travelled east down Parramatta Road which is the main drag into town. In the early days of settlement it was a bullock track and in bad weather it could take a couple of days to travel to Parramatta.

This is the gateway into town George Street is straight ahead and takes you down to the harbour and Pitt Street branches to the right. A lot of solicitors, accountants and financial types have their offices down this street. Many of them have hobby farms which they use to minimise income tax by describing themselves as primary producers. Yet another famous expression, "He's a bloody Pitt Street farmer."

Now we are at the start of George Street near Central Station as you can see this is the grotty end of town. For years Sydney City Council have been promising to fix it up but it never happens. Looks like the pics came out OK but I'm still having a devil of a job positioning photos and getting the text right without big gaps.

Will post some more pics of Sydney later, Bye for now.

Much more interesting than Stockport!

Now't wrong with Stockport Suzy. I lived in a flat on Wellington Rd North for a few years and worked on Hillgate next to a very nice Robinson's pub.

Also frequented a pub, too many times for my own good, at the top of Lancashire Hill forgot name. Merchant navy types drank there and left all sorts of momentoes from around the world.

Next door was a club, the Princess I think, but the less said about that the better.

So now we have three and maybe four reasons for me being transported to Oz.
